Dr. Lauren Smith completed undergraduate, medical School, residency, and hematopathology training at the University of Michigan.

She began her faculty career in the Department of Pathology in 2007. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013 and full Professor in 2018. She served as Section Head of Hematopathology from 2015 to 2022 and Fellowship Director from 2013-2022.

Dr. Smith is currently the co-lead for education at the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM). She is the Director of the Ethics Path of Excellence in the University of Michigan Medical School. She serves as a Clinical Ethicist at Michigan Medicine. She previously chaired the MSMS Bioethics Committee and annual Bioethics Conference.

She is boarded in anatomic and clinical pathology and hematopathology. She also completed the ethics consultation certification (HEC-C). Dr. Smith has authored over 70 articles and book chapters and has given over 70 regional/national/international talks. Her areas of interest include clinical ethics and lymphoma.
